Great island hopping in Seychelles for day trips from La Digue
Veuve Nature Reserve
Opened in 1982, the Veuve Nature Reserve was established to protect the endemic and endangered Seychelles Black Paradise Flycatcher (known locally as ‘Veuve’). Covering 21 hectares on the Western Plateau of the island, the reserve has helped to keep this species from extinction, as well as protect various other species of land and air animals. A walk through the reserve is second to none and a great way to discover the untouched beauty of the island and, even, spot one of the rare birds for which it is name. Don’t forget your cameras!
Nid Aigle (via Belle Vue)
A must visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts is a visit to Nid Aigle – the highest point of the island, offering fantastic views of La Digue and the crystal waters that surround it. The first part of this walk will take you through the village of Belle-Vue, home to the mountain residents of the island, and through onto the hike to Nid Aigle. As you press on to the top, the breath-taking view from up high will make the climb or the worthwhile!
The Plantation
A scenic walk around The Plantation at L’Union Estate – which covers almost a third of the island – is a great way to soak in the scenery as you stroll through the grounds. Although not officially a hike or walking trail, exploring the plantation by foot is a great experience. Re-Trace the steps of the early settlers as you walk the estate of this living monument and discover some of the time honoured traditions and way of life from years gone by. Granitic rocks, the medicinal and food gardens, towering palms, giant tortoises and a working copra mill await you!
